The Art of Selenite Crystals

This gallery of macro images showcases various compositions of selenite crystals found in Utah. Leveraging the light from sunrise, I was able to capture some magical textures, shapes, and patterns within the rock to reveal the beautiful hidden world that can be found right at our feet, powered by geology and time!

These selenite crystals were deposited as sea water evaporated over 165 million years ago. They were then buried under other sediments, including sandstone. After the selenite was deposited and buried, it moved slowly upward along faults, fractures, and cracks. On rare occasion, these clusters of crystals formed domes which have slowly been revealed on the surface through erosion. I was lucky enough to find one of these domes and photograph the crystals within it in some wonderful conditions. Enjoy!
